Epilogue Walking: Santiago to Finisterre and Muxía (self-guided)

A unique Camino de Santiago route that leads you to the stunning Galician coast
Description

For those wanting to continue their pilgrimage up to the coast, there is this nice epilogue that departs directly from Santiago pursuing the sunset. If you are planning on starting in Santiago, we can book a first night there for you.

This unspoiled extension takes you through astonishing and varied sceneries: pine and eucalyptus forests, rolling hills, green fields, small rural villages and last but not least, the wild Atlantic coast. A peaceful walk through 122 km that leads you to the end of the known world in Roman times: Finisterre (Fisterra in Galician).

  • Day: 1 - Santiago - Negreira (21 km/13 miles)

Start walking from Plaza del Obradoiro, leaving behind Santiago de Compostela to get into the rural Galicia. You will pass through eucalyptus forests and small villages before reaching Negreira. Besides the spectacular countryside, one of the highlights is crossing the stone bridge Ponte Maceira, from the thirteenth-century. Once in Negreira, do not miss to visit the Mediaeval Fortress Pazo do Cotón.

  • Day: 2 - Negreira - Lago (27 km/17 miles)

Start your Camino walking out Negreira through its Mediaeval gate. Today's stage is a bit more challeging and longer than the first one; you will walk through a beautiful rural scenery, and the dense forests that accompany you up to A Pena will change into green farmlands. Enjoy the views over the Embalse da Fervenza before reaching the small village of Lago.

  • Day: 3 - Lago - Cee (26,5 km/16,5 miles)

From Lago to Dumbría the Camino follows mostly quiet secondary roads, but after the fork in Hospital you will walk on beautiful paths through pine woods. You will pass the Nuestra Señora de las Nieves Chapel; the benches outside invites you to rest for a while, enjoying the tranquility of the nature that surrounds you.  From Cruceiro da Armada you will get a glimpse of the sea for the first time. After a pronounced descent you arrive in Cee, one of the biggest towns along the Costa da Morte.

  • Day: 4 - Cee - Cape Finisterre/Lighthouse (16 km + 3,5 km/10 miles + 2 miles)

This stage leads you to the well-known Cape Finisterre; today's walk is 16 km from Cee to the lighthouse, plus 3,5 km to go back from the lighthouse to Fisterra town. Along the way, you will pass through eucalyptus and pine woods and you will have more than one chance to take a swim at the beach. Make sure you arrive on time to watch the setting sun over the sea from Cape Finisterre, a really gratifying experience to end the day!

  • Day: 5 - Finisterre - Lires (14 km/9 miles)

Today's walk heads to the North on quiet paths offering some stunning views over the coast. You will stay over in Lires, a small village located halfway between Finisterre and Muxía.

The two stages from Fisterra to Muxía can be done all at once by removing the night in Lires.

  • Day: 6 - Lires - Muxía (15,5 km/10 miles)

This is your last walking day. From Lires there is a gentle ascent that lasts 8,5 km; after that, from Facho de Lourido the path goes downhill through the pine groves. Stop for a refreshing swim at Lourido beach before reaching the quaint village of Muxía, and do not forget to visit the impressive Sanctuary Nosa Señora da Barca.

The two stages from Fisterra to Muxía can be done all at once by removing the night in Lires.
